About the units

Degrees Celsius. The degree Celsius is an SI unit with its own name, exactly the same size as the kelvin but with a shifted zero: a temperature in degrees Celsius is the temperature in kelvin minus 273.15. It is a legal unit in the EU and the standard in weather reports, cooking and medicine outside the US. The name was adopted in 1948, replacing “centigrade”. Water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at roughly 100, but the boiling point is no longer exactly 100: the scale is defined through the kelvin.

Degrees Fahrenheit. The degree Fahrenheit has no definition of its own in the SI; it is fixed by its relation to Celsius, where degrees Celsius are degrees Fahrenheit minus 32, divided by 1.8. One degree Fahrenheit is therefore exactly five ninths of a kelvin. The scale is in everyday and weather use in the US but is absent from the EU units directive. 0 °F is −17.8 °C and 100 °F is 37.8 °C. The conversion is not a factor but a linear function: a difference of 10 °F is 5.6 °C.
