About the units

Degrees Celsius. The degree Celsius is an SI unit with its own name, exactly the same size as the kelvin but with a shifted zero: a temperature in degrees Celsius is the temperature in kelvin minus 273.15. It is a legal unit in the EU and the standard in weather reports, cooking and medicine outside the US. The name was adopted in 1948, replacing “centigrade”. Water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at roughly 100, but the boiling point is no longer exactly 100: the scale is defined through the kelvin.

Kelvin. The kelvin is the SI base unit of temperature, fixed since 2019 by a defined value for the Boltzmann constant, 1.380649 × 10⁻²³ J/K. Its degree is the same size as the Celsius degree, but its zero is absolute: 0 K is −273.15 °C. It is a legal unit in the EU and the standard in physics, chemistry and engineering. Write “273 K”, never “273 °K” or “degrees kelvin”, since the degree sign was dropped in 1967.
