How it works

Days and weeks are added straight: seven days is always one week, wherever you are in the calendar.

Months and years are less simple, because months differ in length. 31 January plus one month lands on 28 February, or 29 in a leap year, because the date you are aiming for does not exist. The tool says so when that happens.

Working days count Monday to Friday only. Five working days from a Friday lands on the next Friday. Public holidays are not removed here; the working days tool does that instead.

A date counted forward by some months and then back by the same number does not always land where it started, precisely because of that clamping to the last day of the month.

How the tool counts

Days and weeks are added as whole days, seven to a week. Months and years are added in a single step from the start date, a year being twelve months, and the day is clamped to the last day of the month if it does not exist in the month you land in. Two months at once therefore does not always give the same answer as one month twice: 31 January 2026 plus two months is 31 March, but plus one month is 28 February, and one more month from there is 28 March. In the same way, 29 February 2024 plus one year is 28 February 2025, while plus four years is 29 February 2028.

With working days, the tool steps one day at a time from the day after the start date and counts Monday to Friday only, so the start date itself never counts. One working day after a Saturday is the Monday, and one working day back from a Monday is the Friday before. From Thursday 1 October 2026, 30 working days lands on Thursday 12 November, in week 46, since 30 weekdays make six full weeks. The amount can be anything from 0 to 100,000.

Deadlines under the Civil Procedure Rules

Time limits in civil cases in England and Wales follow rule 2.8 of the Civil Procedure Rules, which counts periods expressed in days as clear days: the day the period begins is left out, and so is the day of the event when the period is defined by one. For a period running forward from a date, that matches the tool. In the rule’s own example a claim form is served on 2 October and the particulars of claim are due within 14 days, so the last day is 16 October, which is what the tool gives for 2 October plus 14 days.

Two differences remain. When the period counts back from an event, such as notice served at least three days before a hearing, the event day is excluded as well, so you need one day more than the tool counts back. And for periods of five days or less the rule also leaves out Saturdays, Sundays, bank holidays, Christmas Day and Good Friday, while the working-day option here skips weekends only. Rule 2.10 adds that a month in a judgment or order means a calendar month, which is how the tool adds months.
