RPI is not an accredited official statistic, but ONS still publishes it because contracts and index-linked gilts refer to it.

How it works

The table shows UK RPI on the base Jan 1987=100, exactly as the statistics office publishes it. An index value means little on its own; it is the ratio between two values that shows how much prices have changed.

The 12-month change compares a month with the same month a year earlier and is the figure usually reported as the inflation rate. The change on the month before is affected by the season, such as sales and energy prices, and says less about the trend. The changes here are calculated from the published index values and can differ by a tenth from the statistics office’s own figure, which is sometimes calculated from unrounded numbers.

The annual average is the mean of the year’s twelve months and is shown only for complete years. Contracts that uprate an amount by a particular month’s index use the monthly value, not the annual average.

The table can be copied as CSV for a spreadsheet. The copied figures use a decimal point and commas between the columns.
